“How I Didn’t Kill My Father and How Much I Regret It” is an excellent, novel with a carefully thought-out composition and written in artistic prose, that combines different literary genres in an absolutely innovative way. Alongside the reportage elements there is a drama which is a fictional meeting; the narrator’s personal statements are juxtaposed with an interview; the essays evoke flashbacks; the latter are continued in superbly written dialogues which in turn develop into a kind of diary or record of the narrator’s emotions and his current reading list. […] Emotions are the most important here. The whole spectrum of them. However, do not be fooled by the first associations with the title. Yes, this is the text that makes you sob and gasp for breath. At the same time, it is a humorous prose, often even comedic, which sometimes emanates eroticism
or arouses anger. Pakuła confronts us with powerless rage and anger. With a sense of helplessness. […] How I did not kill my father and how much I regret it is the most powerful record of a father’s illness, pain and death and his funeral that I have read so far. Here, the Polish literature has a chance to deal with these issues with absolute, painful sobriety. Maybe it’s time to shake off the metaphysical games of ambiguity? Are we ready for that?”
